A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
