Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
