Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
