Over two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and further global sports figures have signed a letter demanding a stop to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is facing execution in the nation.

Growing International Outrage

Amidst rising worldwide anger over the country's escalating use of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the forcefully phrased statement censures the Iranian regime's verdict to uphold the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, 30, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was arrested for taking part in national uprisings in 2019 and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has endured 60 months in incarceration, where he has been tortured and kept in isolation.

“Sport is intended to encourage hope, solidarity, and fortitude,” the endorsers wrote. “The capital punishment of a champion for his political views is a blatant attack on these values and a caution to any competitor who dares to express dissent.
